Looking forward to getting through it myself when I find the time. Have been avoiding reading all the various review threads until then! I still need to read the prequel short story too, think I have that since late 2023 and still not got to it!

Not looking for works of art from the Black Library but they often make surprisingly good page turners. I feel if it were on a 10 point scale being Warhammer and about one and EC another just in personal enjoyment given the connection.

I didn't realise there was a short story, gonna have to scrounge that up soon.

I think Gotrek, and previously Gotrek and Felix are a great example of Black Library. Are they high art? No. Peak fantasy? No. But they're absolutely excellent pulp fun. It's fine to enjoy a bit of light entertainment where the angry dwarf goes around punching things and chopping things.

Black library are pretty consistent at that. They're rarely bad or boring(I thik Battle for the Abyss and CS Goto's work are the only ones considered really terrible) and I'll happily take consistent page turners.

Even though I was fairly negative about Lord Of Excess in the thread, I need to say I did enjoy it, and enough that I will listen to it again. I wasn't on par with the Night Lords books, Lords Of Silence, or Fabius' trilogy, but that's a bloody high standard.

The book overall is getting a polarized reaction it seems and from what I'm seeing it's leaning towards the negative. I think it was doing well enough in the first third of the book but falls off after that point and never really recovered. I enjoyed the short story prequel well enough.

100% agree, first part of the book is great, second part not as much, even if the last chapter, with Xantine finally being competent (and very lucky) was pleasant too.
