Having previously focused more on the painting side, a lot of that experimenting and aimed at improvement over output, and regularly taken 50+ hours per mini I'd naturally never actually had a fully painted 2000 point army. Skirmish games, yes, Mordheim, Necromunda, Blood Bowl etc., but never 40k.

Add into that demanding work and 2 (soon 3!) kids and it was never going to happen at that rate. I'm lucky if I have a few hours a week and might get a game a month in.

I finally bit the bullet / got over myself and turned my eye to speed painting, seeing if I could maybe aim for 50 minutes rather than 50 hours per mini. In the end I've been averaging 75-90 mins per mini. Even though the results are table-top quality at best, but damned if it's isn't nice to get a riot of colour out the table!

I'll probably finish the 3000 or so points I have sitting just in time for the new Codex, but I'll gladly take that hit if it means we finally have our time in the sun!

There's is a local large GT here usually around Semptember, so my aim is to have a fully painted 2000 point army by then (Sept 2024).

There's a bigger casual 3000 point tournament in November as well so if I get my finger out I'll aim for that too.

Quality / Painting level prior

Selection of where I was before an extended break. The first picture is a before and after what I could produce - I stopped painting and read tutorials for about 3 months before picking up a brush again, some difference learning how to actually paid vs slapping it on!

First mini back after a break

This is what 'broke' me, it was pretty clear I was never going to get anything finished at this rate, took me nearly 50 hours from memory. I might have gotten a single 5 man unit complete in that rate in a year with the time I have free. Maybe 1 centerpiece (looking at you HH Fulrgim!)

Really digging the green and pink combo.

I done something similar once, with a single mini, but with a much less eye catching result.

Cheers folks, have been using the same scheme for nearly 20 years I recon. Before that it was black and silver but the same blended green. I think it was the first thing I learned to paint properly back when learning wet and wet blending, blew my mind.

Those minis of yours in the welcome thread are absolutely fantastic as well @Firebrand. Glad to see hobby stuff already starting to come through!

Currently on my desk I have these Obliterators half way through a Slap chop. Maybe 5 hours to finish them but haven't lifted a buhg in 2 months between work, kids and getting the site up.

Have these waiting as a treat after I finish my base 2k points, looking at 200 hours work (50 each) and making them display quality, bit of practice for fulgrim. Hoping I can switch them to part of a Chosen retinue or something rather than champs but the power fists make that hard and they're not really dynamic enough.

Throwback to the old sonic dread, have a sonic brut. Quick and dirt job and will get the slap chop treatment at some point, but was a decent proof on concept, The sonic weapons are the backpack vents of an old daemon prince, seems a pretty each bit to get and easier enough for it to represent a few weapons in the rules for now. Twin linked Blast Masters would be nice though...

After I finish the Obliterators I have 10 chosen and a Chaos lord to slap chop through. Then Lucius, Bile and a Termi Sorc to go for TT+ quality.

Unlikely to finish before the new codex drops and half my list becomes junk tier!

I managed to get some time a few months ago to get some painting in, even finally got an airbrush to play with before life went crazy.

Hoping will be able to get some time over the holidays to finish off the last few and get 2k table top finally painted to go until the Codex invalidates some of it!
