If you can find someone to play with, you could use the new and old models with the 3.5 rules, which were amazing in customization terms.
I haven't been playing 40k for super long, started in the second half of 9th, but I look at some of the legends datasheets and wish we had the level of customization and flavor there was back then. For me personally, I try to make my models the coolest they can be and follow the current rules to the best of my ability, but don't let it stop me from hobbying. The models spend much more time on my shelf than on the table anyway. I don't mine current 40k, but its all I really know.
I think another version of 40K is on the horizon soon enough, I'll likely give that a try. If I"m lucky enough to get my hands on an EC box, I'll have the lovely new codex to devour prior.
Well, definitely at least one more year of the current edition, given the codex release schedule. We also don´t know how much things will change from the current edition into the next one. At least you´ll have some new amazing minis to work on meanwhile!

See now I'm fairly new to the hobby, so with the recent release of the EC codex I'm as invigorated and motivated as ever, and I feel bad because I see a lot of posts like this from veterans of 40k. It saddens me because I feel like this should be the most enthusiastic time for everyone with the release of a standalone codex and a bunch of brand new models, but I also haven't had the opportunity to get burnt out and disappointed. I'm like a spoiled kid on Christmas during the recession who's unaware of all the struggles in the world.
Here's to hoping with 11th edition, though. I see a lot of potential for improvement and much needed changes/additions, but I guess we'll have to see.

I mean, there is an absolute LOT to be excited about, certainly! And the future looks good imo, we just need some more units and we´ll be golden. But given all the years of waiting, finally having our codex and our gorgeous new minis is good indeed!
There's things to be positive for but I think GW cementing when the god legions outside of Death Guard will get the units they require is what would shift things to a more overall positive view. There was a lot of hope for World Eaters getting a second wave and when that failed to appear it had a knock on effect for the remaining legions, the realization they if the latest legion isn't getting much needed love neither is the next nor would the prior.
The 10th edition codices have been quite dire in terms of quality and EC suffered for having not arrived in an earlier edition, I can only hope this won't be the case in 11th. The details, lore and even something as basic as paint schemes were low effort in comparison to what came before leaving very little to discuss for what should have been a decent expansion to the legions lore.
The codex's roster of units is extremely limited even compared to other god legion lists who themselves were considered limited before the release of EC, the lack of internal balance despite the small roster has not helped in this matter.
Then after all that there was the hope of the new Fulgrim novel which was another disappointment to add on.
The initial model release was overall well received but what's come after hasn't been ideal and lead the current state of things for veterans.
